How To Prepare For A Kitchen Renovation

So you’ve taken the plunge and made plans for your kitchen renovation, and you’re in the weeks (or days!) leading up to the renovation start date and your dream kitchen. Amidst the excitement, one question often remains: How do I prepare?

Although this is often quite a daunting task, it doesn’t have to be stressful if you’re well prepared ahead of time — in fact, you’ve begun the preparation process just by reading this post! To prepare for a kitchen renovation:

  1. Declutter and sort kitchen.

  2. Pack up kitchen items, utensils and appliances.

  3. Arrange a temporary kitchen.

  4. Ensure your space is child and pet-safe.

If you’re yet to start your kitchen renovation process, head to our How to Begin a Kitchen Renovation post first. This walks you through how to determine a budget, design your dream kitchen and choose your expert team.

At Cwtch Haus, our kitchen renovation plans are unique and entirely bespoke to suit your lifestyle and needs. Book your free home measure today to find out how we can aid your home renovation today.

  1. Declutter and Sort Kitchen

To begin preparation for your kitchen renovation, you should first declutter the space. Over the years, our kitchen collects lots of bits and bobs that we don’t need or no longer use. Whether it’s excess utensils, cracked plates, broken appliances or decorations hidden in the back of the cupboard, this is the time to clear them out.

Sort these items into donate, recycle, sell and bin piles, and make sure to take that action as soon as possible.

Depending on the state of your current kitchen, this can be quite a time-consuming and tiresome task so start as soon as possible. Completing it over a period of time in manageable chunks, rather than in one frantic afternoon, will make it much easier.

2. Pack Up Kitchen

Next, you need to pack up the items you want to keep. Before you get started, you should allocate an area for items that will need to be accessed on a regular basis. This might include non-perishable drinks, snacks and dried goods, and enough mugs, cups, plates and utensils for each person — it all comes down to your specific lifestyle, so think about what you use on a regular basis. Don’t forget to set aside storage containers, foil and cling film too.

To make things easier, you might want to use disposable cups, plates and dinnerware during the renovation.

Don’t forget to take down secured objects — like blinds, wall-mounted clocks, photos or other collectibles— at this stage.

To pack non-essential items then, we would reccomend that you group “like items” together and place them in safe, secure and labelled boxes. This will keep your items protected, and make them much easier to unpack when your kitchen renovation is complete.

3. Arrange a Temporary Kitchen

Unless you plan to eat out for all your meals during the kitchen renovation, it’s a good idea to set up a temporary kitchen.

To do this, move your fridge, freezer and microwave into another room so you can store and cook food. You might also want to take a kettle, toaster, slow-cooker and coffee machine — as well as whatever else you cook with that can be moved with ease. If possible, this should be near a water source.

Don’t forget to include other essential items like oven gloves, paper towels, bin bags, washing-up liquid, cloths and sponges (as well as the must-have items you prepared in the previous step).

If you haven’t got the space or means for a temporary kitchen, you should see if a neighbour, friend or family member will let you use theirs while you renovate. If not, see if you can plan your next vacation in time with the renovation!

4. Ensure It’s Child and Pet-Safe

Your home will not be as child or pet-proof during your kitchen renovation, so ensure it is as safe as possible. Restrict access to the construction area, in particular when the work is going on, and consider a babysitter and pet-sitter if either are effected by loud noises and disruption.

And that’s it! You’re prepared for your kitchen renovation. For tips on renovating a kitchen in the right order, check out our blog. And for more advice, head to our blog page or get in contact about our kitchen renovation services.
