How to Prepare for a Bathroom Renovation

As well as the kitchen, your bathroom is one of the most used rooms in your home, and after years of umming and ahing, you’ve finally decided to give your bathroom the facelift it needs. This is an incredibly exciting time - you’re finally getting your dream bathroom!

Yet, amidst the excitement, a bathroom renovation can be pretty daunting, especially if this is your first ever renovation project. You might be asking yourself ‘How do I prepare?’, and this is where we can help!

To prepare for a bathroom renovation:

  1. Plan, plan, plan

  2. Choose a renovation firm

  3. Declutter and clear the space

  4. Arrange a temporary bathroom setup

  5. Prepare for dust and debris

1. Plan, Plan, Plan

So, you’ve decided it’s time for a bathroom renovation, but where do you start? As you would with anything… a plan!

Firstly, you want to set out who will be using the room, as this will have a big influence on how you plan the design of the bathroom. Will it be an en-suite shower room for two? Or a family bathroom that will require a bath and plenty of storage for the kids bits and bobs?

In the early planning phase you’ll want to choose your style, as this will help narrow down the choice of fittings. Do you want a classic, chic or a contemporary look?

Look at Pinterest or design firm portfolios of past work for some inspiration. We’ve also compiled a list of the top 2024 bathroom design trends, which can help!

It’s also important to think about how much you are willing to spend on the renovation, as having a set budget in mind will help you make informed decisions and prioritise essential elements of the project.

Once you’ve determined all of the above, make a detailed plan that includes the scope of work, timeline, and any necessary permits needed.

2. Choose a Renovation Firm

While some simple bathroom renovation projects and repair jobs can be done yourself, it’s highly recommended to hire professionals to do the work for you.

This is especially the case if your renovation involves significant plumbing, electrical work, or structural changes. A licensed contractor, plumber, electrician, and designer can ensure the bathroom project meets safety standards and local building codes.

What to Consider When Choosing a Renovation Company

There are a number of things to consider when choosing the right design and renovation firm, such as their past client testimonials, portfolios of their past completed projects and their level of experience.

  • Past customer testimonials - Testimonials provide insights into real-life experiences of past customers, and reading about the experiences of others who have worked with the firm will give you a more realistic understanding of what you can expect.

  • Portfolios of past projects - While testimonials are great for providing insights into real life experiences of working with the firm, it’s also important to visually see their past work. Check out some of the bespoke spaces we've created for our customers in West Wales.

  • Years of experience - When looking for a trustworthy and reliable design and renovation company, their experience should be at the top of your priorities list. How can you trust a firm to do the job well if they haven’t got a proven track record of successfully completed bathroom projects

  • Credentials - Making sure the firm you choose has the correct credentials helps you avoid potential legal issues and ensures compliance with local regulations.

While some simple renovation jobs can be done yourself, it’s highly recommended to hire the professionals to do the work for you.

3. Declutter and Clear the Space

Once you’ve organised the above, it’ll be time to declutter and clear your bathroom space ready for the work.

Begin by taking a good look at your bathroom and identifying items that are essential and those that can be discarded or stored elsewhere during renovations. Clear away everything from the countertops, shelves, and any other surfaces, and remove any tables, chairs, mats so that the room is bare.

Once all items are removed, give the surfaces a good wipe down with a disinfectant cleaner.

Organise the remaining items into storage bins or baskets, and divide the items into categories such as medications, toiletries and cleaning supplies with labels. This way, they’ll be easy to find when you need them again.

Remember that during the renovation, you’ll still need access to the necessities, so be sure to keep all your essential toiletries, medications, and personal items in a designated area or bag so that they are easily accessible.

This brings us nicely onto our next point…

4. Arrange a Temporary Bathroom Setup

How long you’ll have to cope without a fully functional bathroom will all depend on the scale and complexity of the work. A quick job might only take a matter of days, but if you are planning to move fittings, redesign or relocate plumbing, it might take significantly longer.

Arranging a temporary bathroom setup during a bathroom renovation is essential to ensure you have access to basic amenities while the project is underway. Ideally, this should be a space with access to water and drainage, such as a powder room, laundry room, or spare bathroom.

If you’ve got a gym membership, it could be a good idea to use their shower facilities while you’re without one.

If you haven’t got the space for a temporary bathroom or a gym membership, ask a neighbour, friend or local family member to let you use theirs while the renovation is going on. If not, see if you can plan your next holiday in line with the renovation!

5. Prepare for Dust and Debris

The last thing you should prepare for with your bathroom renovation is dust, debris and general disruption.

It’s a good idea to use plastic sheeting or tarps to cover doorways and openings, to prevent dust and debris from spreading to other parts of your home.

You should also protect floors from the mess with drop cloths or heavy-duty plastic sheeting, and move furniture out of the renovation area, or cover it with plastic sheeting to prevent damage.

It’s also important to note that your house will not be as child or pet-proof during your bathroom renovation, so ensure it is as safe as possible. To do this, you might want to restrict access to the construction area, especially when the work is going on, and even think about getting a pet-sitter if they will be left alone during the renovation and usually affected by loud noises and disruption.
