How to Interior Design Your Bedroom

Updated on 10/04/2025

As you’ll likely spend 27 years of your life in bed, it’s extra important to create a space you can truly relax in (and that feels just a bit special too!) If you’re wondering how to design your bedroom, but like an interior designer, we’ve got you covered in this guide.

Here’s how to interior design your bedroom in 5 steps:

  1. Choose your bedroom layout.

  2. Select your colour scheme.

  3. Invest in quality furniture and bedding.

  4. Add personality with decor and accessories.

  5. Prioritise comfort and functionality.

1. Choose Your Bedroom Layout

The layout is the foundation of your bedroom design. Start by considering the size and shape of your room, as well as the placement of windows, doors, and built-in features like wardrobes. Your bed is the focal point, so position it in a way that feels natural and maximises space. For example:

  • Place the bed against a solid wall for a feeling of security and balance.

  • Ensure there’s enough space around the bed for movement and other furniture.

  • Avoid placing the bed under a window, as this can disrupt sleep quality.

Additionally, think about how other furniture, like bedside tables, wardrobes, or a desk, will fit. Creating a functional flow within your layout is key to a harmonious design.

It’s worth adding that, if you have a small bedroom, we have particular advice on how to make your bedroom look bigger and how to make the most of a smaller sleeping space.

Dear Modern architect Cliff Tan explains the Feng Shui behind where to place your bed.

2. Select a Colour Scheme

Your bedroom’s colour palette sets the tone for the entire space. Soft, neutral tones like whites, greys, and pastels are excellent for promoting calmness and relaxation. Or you can opt for on-trend moody hues of deep chocolate brown, muted plum or inkpot blue to create a low-key, cocooning ambience.

When choosing your colour scheme, think about:

  • Walls: Whether you’ll paint, wallpaper, or use panelling.

  • Furnishings: Coordinate your bed linens, curtains, and upholstery with your chosen palette.

  • Accent Colours: Add interest with pops of contrasting colours in artwork, cushions, or rugs.

Then thinking about how to design your bedroom thoughtfully, remember that a cohesive colour scheme will tie your room together.

3. Invest in Quality Furniture and Bedding

When it comes to choosing where to invest for your bedroom, and what to keep simple, we love this tip by designer Ingrid Fetell Lee to prioritise large surface areas. In your bedroom, this means paying particular attention to your bed and bedding, which can transform the look and feel of your room. Also, don’t underestimate the impact of a stylish statement headboard!

Choosing high-quality sheets and duvets is the best way to make your bedroom feel cosy and inviting. Natural fabrics such as organic cotton and linen aren’t only more breathable, they’re also more sustainable.

Depending on your budget, you can also consider:

  • Bed Frame and Mattress: Prioritise a sturdy bed frame and a comfortable mattress that supports restful sleep.

  • Storage: Choose furniture that offers practical storage solutions, such as bedside tables with drawers or an ottoman bed.

  • Lighting: Layer your lighting with a mix of ambient (ceiling lights), task (reading lamps), and accent (fairy lights or wall sconces) options to create a versatile atmosphere. For more, read our guide on how to choose bedroom lighting.

4. Add Personality with Decor and Accessories

The finishing touches make your bedroom uniquely yours. Personalise the space with accessories that reflect your style and create a sense of comfort.

  • Artwork: Hang paintings or framed prints that resonate with you. A statement piece above the bed can add drama.

  • Soft Furnishings: Use cushions, throws, and rugs to introduce texture and layers.

  • Mirrors: Strategically placed mirrors can enhance natural light and make the room feel larger.

  • Plants: Incorporate greenery to bring life and a calming vibe to the space.

Remember, less is often more. Avoid cluttering your room with too many accessories, as this can detract from its restful atmosphere.

5. Prioritise Comfort and Functionality

The last step of designing your bedroom is to optimise your space for how you mean to use it. Ultimately, most bedrooms will be a retreat where comfort takes precedence. Pay attention to the small details that improve usability and relaxation. For example:

  • Choose blackout curtains or blinds to block out light and ensure better sleep.

  • Include a chair or bench for seating, whether for reading or getting dressed.

  • Ensure there are sufficient outlets near the bed for charging devices or plugging in lamps.

Comfort is about more than aesthetics; it’s about making the room work for you in everyday life.

While we don’t recommend working in your bedroom, it’s worth noting that bedrooms can be multifunctional spaces. For when you do need to work or study in your bedroom, a pony headboard is a clever idea to separate your sleeping and desk space as well as playing into the ‘hotel-style’ bedroom trend.
