Energy Efficient Home Appliances And Accessories You Should Know About

With the UK in the midst of an energy crisis, thinking of ways in which we can all be more energy efficient will be on the majority of people’s minds.

Appliances are something that we use everyday that we spend in our houses, though we might not necessarily pay much attention to them. In fact, about ‘4% of your energy bill is spent on powering kitchen appliances’ alone.

There are various appliances on the market that can aid you in your bid to be more energy efficient this winter. Some energy efficient appliances include, but are not limited to:

  1. Quooker boiling water taps

  2. Smart lighting systems

  3. Water-efficient shower heads

  4. Air fryer

    1. Quooker Boiling Water Taps

One of the first energy-efficient appliances that’s worthy of mentioning is Quooker boiling water taps for your kitchen.

In short, a Quooker boiling water tap dispenses cold, hot, and 100°C boiling water. The water is stored in a tank that is then linked to the tap.

According to Quooker, the tank ‘acts like a vacuum flask connected to the water mains. The air in the insulated wall is so thin that the heat is unable to escape’.

As it only takes 10 watts to keep the water in the tank at 110°C and you have boiling hot water immediately, switching to a Quooker boiling water tap reduces, if not eliminates the need to boil your kettle on a regular basis.

When you consider how much you might need boiling water to cook and make hot drinks multiple times throughout the day, a boiling water tap thus enables you to be more energy efficient and conscious at home.

2. Smart Lighting Systems

Next up, we have smart lighting systems. We’re all guilty of leaving lights on every now and again when we could be conserving energy, and this is where smart lighting systems can help.

Smart lighting systems offer a solution to wasting electricity, as unlike traditional light bulbs, they can be controlled through voice commands or through your phone.

The lights in your home are wirelessly connected to a central system, allowing you to control and turn off the lights remotely through an app on your smartphone.

Smart lights use less power and last a lot longer than traditional bulbs. In addition to this, smart lighting systems also allow you to create schedules where your lights are supposed to be on and off, allowing you to conserve energy without even having to think about it.

Other means of being more energy efficient with lighting can involve installing dimmer switches, which allow you to reduce the flow of electricity to the bump and therefore reduce the amount of electricity that is being used.

3. Water-Efficient Shower Heads

Another household accessory worthy of mentioning when it comes to being more energy efficient is water-efficient shower heads.

In a study by Mira Showers, it was found that 62% of Brits shower a minimum of once a day, with the average person spending 7 to 8 minutes in the shower. When you apply this to every member of your household, this emphasises just how much water you use.

According to EDF, fitting a water-efficient shower head in your bathroom can help to reduce water use by 40%, highlighting how much money you could save if you invested in a water-efficient shower head for your bathroom.

In short, the more you reduce the amount of water you use in a day, the less money that you will spend on heating that water.

Bearing this in mind, researching installing a water-efficient shower head in your bathroom is worth it to start making savings.

4. Air Fryer

Last, but by no means least, air fryers are a highly energy efficient kitchen appliance that are becoming increasingly popular.

In fact, research carried out by Utilita found that ‘the annual savings of using an air fryer could be up to £279.66 per year’.

That said, it’s important to note that air fryers can vary in terms of energy efficiency, so you will need to ensure that you do your research to compare brands.

Various sweet and savoury foods can be cooked in an air fryer, from air fried salmon to potato wedges, to sweets such as doughnuts, making them a highly versatile and energy efficient addition to the kitchen.
