5 Essential Steps To Take Before Renovating Your Bedroom

Home improvements are on the rise, with more and more people choosing to renovate their homes.

In fact, a survey found that ‘more than half of homeowners (53%) renovated in 2021’, which is a 4% increase since 2020.

As bedrooms are one of the most used rooms in the entire house, planning a bedroom renovation isn’t always an easy feat.

There are many factors that you will need to consider when planning your renovation.

Before renovating a bedroom, you will need to:

  1. Establish your budget

  2. Create a rough floor plan

  3. Find the right designers

  4. Schedule the project

  5. Prepare the bedroom for renovation

1. Establish Your Budget

Before you can get to planning your dream bedroom renovation, you will first need to establish your budget.

The reason you want to do this in the beginning is that it will set the precedent for the entire project. Your budget will determine everything from the cost of your designers to the cost of the materials that you use for your bedroom renovation.

It’s far easier for a project to go over budget than under budget, so plan the financials of your bedroom renovation intensely, leaving room for potential hidden costs.

As such, it’s important to sit down and work out your finances to determine how much you can realistically spend on your bedroom renovation without running into financial difficulties.

It’s best to be conservative when it comes to setting your budget, as you don’t want to put yourself in debt or live beyond your means.

2. Create A Rough Floor Plan

Whilst your floor plan doesn’t need to be top industry standard or even to scale, having some rough ideas drawn digitally or on a notepad will allow your design team to create something closer to your vision.

If your bedroom isn’t the only room you're renovating, creating a rough floor plan will also save you time on sending revisions and changes to your designers. The best part is, creating a digital floor plan has never been easier.

Creating a digital floor plan

Design tools have become a whole lot more accessible for the non-designer with Canva offering a free-to-use and easy-to-share platform where anyone can create and download rough designs by selecting a template and using the drag and drop tools.

A digital draft of your floor plan won’t take longer than an hour or two, and could save double that in communication with your designer.

3. Find The Right Designers

Once you have established your budget, you can set about finding the right designers for your project.

While you may be able to undertake simple projects yourself with the help of DIY tips, this isn’t the case for every project.

That said, if there’s lots of heavy lifting involved, planning an extensive renovation for your bedroom is best left to the professionals.

Hiring a professional designer can make the difference in the final project.

Professional designers have years of experience under their belts and will be able to deliver your project to a high quality standard, emphasised by the fact that ‘92% of Homeowners sought help from professionals for their renovations in 2021’.

Read reviews before choosing

Be sure to read reviews when looking for a designer and check their portfolio to see their past projects. This will help you to establish whether you think they’re a right fit.

If you do end up doing a bad job yourself, you could end up wasting hundreds if you’re not happy with the result, so it’s best to save yourself money in the long run by opting for designers that you trust.

4. Schedule The Project

Once you have chosen your designers, you will need to schedule the project.

Scheduling the project will likely take some liaising with your designers, as you will need to establish a good timeframe for you during a time when they’re available to carry out the work.

When the project can be carried out will largely depend on the designer’s books, so you will need to be prepared to be flexible.

Remain flexible where possible

Being flexible is true of the whole project, as you never know when you could run into unexpected delays.

That said, when figuring out the schedule, be sure to remember that your bedroom will be out of action during this period of time. As such, you will need to make other arrangements, such as preparing a spare room for the duration of the renovation.

5. Prepare The Bedroom For Renovation

Last, but by no means least, you will need to prepare the bedroom for renovation.

To do this, you will need to remove all furniture from the room. This might take advanced preparation, as some pieces of furniture might need to be disassembled before your designers arrive to measure the space accurately.

Don’t hesitate to use a storage facility during the project, as the period will generally be less than 30 days, it won’t put too much weight on your renovation budget.

Once your furniture has been disassembled, you will need to remove the furniture from the space and place it into storage.

Where you choose to store your furniture for the duration of your renovation will entirely depend on the space that you have available to you.

Generally speaking, storing furniture in a spare room or garage is ideal. That said, wherever you store your furniture in the meantime, make sure that it is protected from humidity and dampness to avoid damage.

If you’re stuck for space and have nowhere in your home where you can store the furniture, then you can always hire a storage unit to keep it safe and out of the way. However, booking your furniture in a storage unit might take some forethought and planning, so don’t leave it until the last minute if you wish to do this.
