2024 Bathroom Design Trends

Updated on 22/05/24

When looking at home design trends year-on-year, one thing remains the same: the growing demand for quality, luxurious bathrooms.

When it comes to bathroom renovations in 2024, function and practicality are no longer the main focal points - design also plays a huge part. Bathrooms are a fantastic opportunity to showcase a homeowner's personality, as well as incorporate designs and features that can improve health and wellness.

Even if you’re not looking for a full bathroom renovation, there are numerous ways to refresh your bathroom design and incorporate these top bathroom trends for 2024 — whether you're sprucing up a small apartment bathroom or a luxury retreat.

Let’s jump right in and find out what’s trending this year!

6 of the top 2024 bathroom design trends include:

  1. Spa features

  2. Organic materials

  3. Greenery

  4. Statement backsplashes

  5. Vibrant wallpapers

  6. Wet rooms

1. Spa Features

With more and more people working and exercising from home, along with the increased priority on products and home designs that focus on health and wellness, it’s predicted that we’ll see a huge increased interest in spa-like amenities in bathrooms

Interior designers are seeing steam showers, infrared saunas and cold plunges being requested and incorporated more and more into homes across the country as they become more accessible and affordable. And while it might initially cost a premium to have these features in your home, the likelihood of regular use is much higher. Spa features are also a real selling point over a membership to an external spa and can help add value to your home.

But what’s so special about these spa-like amenities? Well, research has shown that steam showers can actually assist with allergy relief, lower blood pressure and even better sleep.

Likewise, infrared saunas are found to improve skin, flush out toxins, boost circulation and even weight loss. Sounds pretty good, aye?

2. Organic Materials

Organic materials are another example of 2024 bathroom design trends which are growing in popularity across the UK.

Natural materials like wood, wicker and stone have recently become a fundamental part of bathroom design. These materials not only boost visual interest, but they add warmth and harmony to any bathroom, allowing it to feel like a truly luxurious sanctuary.

For bathroom storage of towels or cosmetics, try using a wood vanity or rattan baskets to create an earthy, somewhat spa-like atmosphere.

When it comes to flooring and tiling, stone surfaces like travertine, slate or marble are perfect for adding natural texture to the room. Large stone tiles are especially popular for floors and walls, adding a sense of elegance that works with pretty much any style of bathroom, whether it be a classic traditional design or a more modern style.

 3. Greenery

Adding living greenery is one of the top 2024 bathroom design trends to look out for. Having lots of greenery in a bathroom not only helps to freshen the air but also helps to create a calming ambience, which is exactly what a bathroom should feel like.

A bathroom can be easily transformed into a living oasis by adding features like potted plants, hanging gardens, or even an indoor vertical forest.

That said, it’s important to note that bathrooms have fluctuating temperatures, constant humidity, and lots (or a little) of sunlight depending on what direction windows face and how many there are. Luckily though, there are plenty of houseplants that work well in bathrooms.

Did you know that plants act as natural air purifiers, which is especially beneficial in a humid environment with little ventilation, like a bathroom.

The Best Houseplants for a Bathroom

The general rule of thumb when choosing the best houseplants for a bathroom is targeting those that can thrive in a humid, warm environment, i.e. a tropical plant.

Some examples include:

Pothos plants

As pothos like moderate to low, indirect light, it’s the ideal houseplant to dress up your bathroom shelf or countertop.

Snake plant

Practically impossible to kill, the snake plant is a fantastic option for the bathroom. It grows fastest in bright light conditions, but it can survive in less light too.

Staghorn fern

The staghorn fern is a stunning plant that would thrive in humid bathroom conditions, so you don’t have to feel guilty about taking that extra long shower.

Aloe Vera

The Aloe vera plant is a great option if you love both your plants and your beauty. The gooey insides of the Aloe plant’s leaves can be used to help soothe skin, heal minor burns, reduce itch, and more. Simply cut off a mature leaf at the base and squeeze out the gel.

4. Statement Backsplashes

Bathroom backsplashes are vertical surfaces that are installed above the sink or countertop to protect the wall from water damage. They are typically made from quartz or marble, but there has been an increased desire to get creative and use tile instead.

Whether it be bold colour tiles, graphic patterned tiles or textured tiles, you can add some serious dimension and custom touches to a bathroom just by changing up the backsplash - no bathroom renovation required!

If you don’t want to opt for tiles for whatever reason, another popular option is using waterproof wallpaper (vinyl-coated) which can withstand moisture and resist any water damage, should it be splashed with liquids.

At Cwtch Haus, we can help you create the bathroom space of your dreams, which suits you and your household’s requirements.

Whether you want clean, classic tiles or darker, granite surfaces, our team can help you select the best surface materials to complement your bathroom.

5. Vibrant Wallpapers

As bathrooms are typically a lot smaller than other rooms in the home, they are the perfect place to go a bit OTT and really show off your creativity. While tiles and a splash of paint are the usual go-to options for bathrooms, but choosing a vibrant wallpaper is a quicker and easier way to transform the space, which can add some real personality to the room.

Embracing patterned wallpaper in a small bathroom can actually make it seem bigger, plus it’s the room all guests are practically guaranteed to see when they come round, so it’s a chance to have a bit of fun and experiment with designs that you might not usually choose for one of the larger rooms.

With so much incredible wallpaper on the market, there is truly something for everyone - from intricate, classic designs to florals and more exotic patterns.

6. Wet Rooms

One of the hottest topics in home design each year is the upside-down trends of showers and baths, and which ones will win the popularity title. Last year, one of the main predictions was that wet rooms and walk-in showers would continue to grow in demand when compared to baths. And this trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere in 2024.

As well as being much more accessible, wet rooms are also a great choice for smaller bathrooms where a bath isn’t suitable, and they can create the illusion of a larger floor space. They’re essentially a stylish, deluxe, and sleek alternative to a walk-in shower, with the added benefit of being much easier to clean as it’s just one big open space.
